How much should I be earning in a permanent Accountancy & Finance job?

According to our 2015 salary survey of the market, administrative level positions like those of a Cashier or Payroll Administrator start at around £13,000 per annum or even less. At the other end of the scale lie positions like Financial Controllers and Auditors who typically earn in excess of £60,000 per annum. Our survey also highlighted that those working in Finance Control and Audit roles significantly earned more than those in Payroll and Credit Control roles.

What kind of freelance opportunities are available in Accountancy & Finance?

There is a longstanding freelance market for the Accountancy and Finance market from the traditional "temp" who might sit in a payroll team to interim and fixed term positions in more senior roles. Regional hotspots tend to favour the large cities (as you'd expect) with hourly rates range from the minimum wage for administrative roles like a Payroll Administrator through to in excess of £40 per hour for senior and interim positions.

What qualifications are required?

The Accountancy and Finance sector is well regulated and qualifications are required in most areas.

There are three separate professional institutes of chartered accountants in the UK (as well as a number of other bodies awarding other accountancy qualifications).

The three are:

  • Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
  • Chartered Accountants Ireland (oversees both Ireland and Northern Ireland)

For the Payroll market, qualifications are offered by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) or the International Association of Book-keepers (IAB); for Credit Control they are offered from the Institute of Credit Management (ICM) and the Credit Services Association (CSA)
