How much should I be earning in a permanent Architecture job? 

When we carried out our salary survey of the Architecture market, entry level positions like those of a Junior CAD Technician or Part 1 start at around £13,000 per annum. At the other end of the scale lie senior appointment positions like Regional Directors and Lead Architects who typically earn in excess of £80,000 per annum. The survey also demonstrated that those working in Space Planning roles earned a lot less than those in Urban Design and Project and Design Management roles.

What kind of freelance opportunities are available in Architecture? 

The freelance market for Architecture tends to be fixated in the big urban areas although there are opportunities elsewhere. Roles range in seniority with a large number available at the Architectural Assistant and Technician level through to Part 3 Architects and beyond. Hourly rates range from £14 per hour for CAD Technicians and Assistants through to in excess of £30 per hour for senior positions.

What qualifications are required? 

The Architecture sector is well regulated and qualifications with a well established set of certifications and pathways. The major awarding bodies are the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The pathway for most Architects after studying an ARB recognised degree course followed by a years professional experience to become RIBA Part 1, then Stage 1 including practical experience/year out, RIBA Part 2 with Stage 2 practical experience, then finally become a RIBA Part 3 Architect.
