How much should I be earning in a permanent Civil, Highways or Structural Engineering job?

In early 2015 we carried out our industry wide salary survey which included the Civil, Highways or Structural Engineering markets. We found that entry level positions like those of a Junior Technician or Draughtsman start at around £13,000 per annum. At the other end of the scale lie senior appointment positions like Project and Account Directorswho typically earn in excess of £80,000 per annum. The survey also demonstrated that those working in Traffic and Transportation roles (including ITS) earned less than those in Infrastructure and a lot less than those in Heavy Civil Engineering roles.

What kind of freelance opportunities are available in Civil, Highways or Structural Engineering?

Freelance roles in the Civil, Highways or Structural Engineering sector range in seniority with a large number available at the CAD Technician level through to all Engineer levels and beyond. Hourly rates range from £10 per hour for CAD Technicians and Assistant Engineers through to in excess of £40 per hour for Principal Engineers.

What qualifications are required?

Most Engineers are educated to degree (BEng) or masters degree level (MEng) and then work toward chartered status with the relevant institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
