Data Centre Services : Hardware Planner 

Job Description:

To plan and manage the installation, movement and removal of hardware and associated cabling using Data Centre Services (DCS) Hardware Planning and Installation (HWIP) processes and in conformance to the current DCS Data Centre Standards.



  • Plan and manage the installation, movement and decommissions of devices and associated cabling within the Raised Floor environment – at present, this is driven through the Requirements Database.
  • Manage the end to end process of these activities ensuring that target or completion dates are met whilst adhering to DCS processes and standards
  • Interface with Project Managers and Facilities Management supplier (CBRE) to review and change Requirements as needed to utilise space and power effectively
  • Understand the impact on site power, cooling and general infrastructure when installing new equipment in the machine room. Recognize when and where problems may occur and work with all parties to develop and agree an acceptable solution
  • Maintain the integrity of the current HWI&P tools and databases and ensure they are updated in a timely manner, in line with documented processes
  • Develop and maintain a good working knowledge of IBM and OEM hardware across all architectures
  • Understand and maintain the interlock between HWI&P activities and Datacentre Asset Management
  • Comply with IBM Data Centre Machine Room Code of Conduct
  • Act as backup to other members of the team when required
  • Be prepared at reasonable notice to work out of hours if requested to do so
  • Be prepared at reasonable notice to travel from base location  to work at other Data Centres if requested to do so

  • Be able to manage the tasks and activities of other HWI&P team members
  • Have a good working knowledge of all types of cabling (Cat5e; Cat6, fibre, etc)
  • IBM office systems e.g. Emails; Instant messaging, spreadsheet; word processing
